How to Assess if Your Kid is Ready for Day Camp

Day camp can be one of the best experiences your child will have in his or her young life. It can prepare your kid for preschool or for longer overnight camps. Day camps also have great summer programs for kids to help them learn new skills, meet new friends or just be active during the summer months. However, simply sending your child to day camp without assessing for readiness may also have negative effects on him or her.

How to Assess if Your Kid is Ready for Day Camp

Here are some tips that can help you assess if your child is ready to join a day camp with a summer program for kids:
  1. Readiness isn’t just about age. Some kids get enrolled in summer programs for kids as early as their toddler years. Whether this is for swimming lessons or arts and crafts specialty camp, you need to find out if the program is fit for the developmental needs of your child in his particular age. Find out also if there is an age group within your chosen camp that your child can belong to.
  2. Is your child always worried when you are not around? Separation anxiety is normal in the first few days of camp. If this is your child’s first time to be away from you for long periods, expect him or her to be a bit resistant during the first few days. Let a week of day camp pass before determining whether or not the separation anxiety is affecting your child so much that he or she would not enjoy the activities for the rest of summer.
  3. Socializing is an integral part of day camp. Some kids warm up to others fairly fast while others take some time. If your child is hesitant about meeting new people, it may be a good idea to bring him or her to other social activities first before considering enrolling in camp.
  4. Is your child able to follow instructions? To be able to safely take part in different activities at day camp without your guidance, your child must be able to listen and follow simple instructions. There are summer programs for kids that require the participation of parents or caregivers (such as swim programs for toddlers), but in most cases, these programs are designed to make your child more independent.
  5. Can he or she communicate his/her needs with adults? This is another important factor to consider before sending off your kid to day camp. You and your child may have a different level of communication where you are able to easily predict his or her needs, but in camp, the setting is entirely different. Other adults must be able to understand what your child is trying to say.
As the parent, you are the best judge of whether or not your child is ready for day camp. You can help ease any anxiety by talking them through what to expect from the program or even visiting the camp grounds before it officially starts.

Factors to Consider when Choosing a Specialty Program

Summer camp for kids, such as Zodiac Camps, offer specialty programs that let youand your child choose which activities to engage in for day camp. It’s a great way to add variety to your child’s summer. Specializing in a specific sport or activity also allows children to enhance their skills and continue to improve in a particular area.

Zodiac’s specialty program is designed for campers aged 5.5 to 12.5 years old. They can choose from the following: Adventure Challenge, Cheerleading, Circus Arts, Culinary Arts, Creatures, Creatures & Creativity, Dance, Extreme Biking, Fashion Arts, Gymnastics, Horseback Riding, Mega Sports, Film & Media, Performing Arts, Rocks, Ropes & Ramps, Science & Magic, Science & Rocketry, Swimming and Tennis, Trampoline Sports, Lake Sports, Snow Sports, Ramps and Science & Technology.

In general, when choosing which specialty to enroll your child in, you can consider the following:
  • If it is aligned with your child’s interest – You may think you know what your child wants, but it is still best to ask him or her opinion about certain specialty programs. It is always a good idea to involve your child in the decision-making process when it comes to choosing a camp.
  • Schedule –Day camps differ from overnight summer camp for kids because you need to work around a particular schedule for getting your child to camp, and picking them up at the end of the day. As such, the schedule of activities for the specialized program also needs to coincide with the schedule of the rest of the family.
  • Group size – Find out how many people are enrolled in particular programs. High quality, low-ratio programs create a better opportunity for learning. Check if your child is comfortable with the number of campers in the program that he or she will need to get along with.
  • Quality of camp’s facilities – If your child is into swimming, lake sports or trampoline classes, it is best to check beforehand if your chosen day camp has the facilities for such activities.
  • Equipment needed – It is important to know what kind of equipment will be needed for your child’s chosen specialty. This will work together with your family budget to ensure that the sport or chosen activity can be supported and sustained by the family even after summer. Summer camps for kids that deal with sports often have the sports equipment available at the camp, so there is no need to purchase right away. However, items like hockey masks, hockey sticks, skates or other sports equipment need to be purchased should your son or daughter decide to pursue the sport after camp.

Swimming is an enriching sport that helps your child learn a lifetime skill, make new friends, and improve their self-confidence. There are different swimming programs for kids that you can find online, but Zodiac Swim School offers comprehensive training and qualified instructors to teach your kids how to swim properly.

The Zodiac Difference
Zodiac Swim School sets itself apart from the competition by offering different swimming programs and experienced instructors that guide children through the program. The instructors take time to assist each child on the program and help them learn the basics of swimming.

Zodiac Swim School also offers swimming programs for kidsduring different seasons. If your child is unavailable in the summer, they can join the program during spring, fall, or winter. The swim school are lessons conducted in high quality swimming facilities in Havergal College, Toronto French School, High Park Village, and Forest Hill Collegiate Institute.

Swimming Programs for Kids
Zodiac Swim School has an edge over their competitors because of their diverse swimmingprograms for kids. They have swimming programs for beginners, intermediate, and advanced level swimmers.

Aquatic Swim Club & Red Cross Swim Kids
The program was designed to help kids learn how to swim and build a solid foundation for the next levels. Swimming techniques and water safety are incorporated into the program. At each level, kids are taught to make safe decisions on, in, and around the water. Kids learn different strokes, and improve their skill on the water using tried and tested swimming techniques.

The swimming programs offered by Zodiac Swim School are further broken down into different tiers based on proficiency and age. There are also swimmingprograms for kids who wish to pursue lifeguarding. For kids who want to achieve higher levels of swimming beyond learning the basics, Zodiac Swim offers a tiered lifeguarding program. The lifeguarding program teaches kids how to make safe decisions for themselves and the person they are trying to rescue. Kids are slowly moved into the next level before they become lifeguards. At each level, kids are taught different swimming strokes, how to stay afloat, submerging in the water, holding their breath, and how to make the right decisions while in the water.

Kids enrolled in the swimming programs are guided every step of the way. An instructor assists them as they submerge in the water, learn new strokes, practice strokes learned, and swim farther distances.

Toronto, Ontario (http://zodiacswim.on.ca/)/ May 2014/ -- Zodiac Swim School offers adult swim programs aside from its swimming programs for teenagers and toddlers. The program is designed to help adults who were unable to take swimming lessons when they were younger or for adults who want to improve their swimming skills.

The adult swim programs provided by Zodiac Swim School are divided into tiers for participants with no swimming background and for swimmers with little to more experience. How to Prepare for Adult Swimming Lessons and Stay Motivated

There are a lot of reasons why people give up on learning how to swim. Here are some reasons:

  • They have a fear of the water;
  • They do not feel they need to learn to swim because they live far from any body of water;
  • They have had a traumatic pool experience when they were younger; and/or
  • They did not have access to swim lessons as children.
These days, swim schools and instructors are trying to change all that. The advantages of learning how to swim far outweigh the concerns raised above. After all, it is never too late to learn how to swim. There are individuals who take the plunge even at age 50. There are already adult swimming lessons to address fears and issues of individual adults.

The trend is rising and more adults are starting to get convinced that swimming is a necessary skill to learn.

The number one reason adults choose to go to swimming classes is their kids. Those who grew up dodging all opportunities to learn to swim find themselves feeling helpless around their kids who love playing in the water. In case of an emergency, who would run and rescue a child in trouble? Definitely not the parent who is too afraid to put their head in the water. To know that one is capable of saving a child is enough for an adult to stay motivated. It does not matter whether a family lives near a body of water or if they own a pool or not. Swimming comes in handy especially on holidays.

Adults just need to get over their fear of water and everything else falls into place. Instructors would say that the body is naturally buoyant. An adult just needs to trust his body to do its job and not fight the natural way the body floats when in a relaxed state.

The key is keeping one’s eyes on the prize. A first-time participant in an adult swimming lesson just needs to look ahead and he/she will stay motivated to learn how to swim. He just needs to relax and prepare the mind for the lessons.

Is it the right swim program for you?

Find the right swim program for you based on skill level. Zodiac Swim School offers various programs for all ages.

Swimming is a life skill. Swimming can save lives. These statements are true but a lot of people, including kids, still cannot swim and some cannot even float in the water. Some simply never had the chance to learn. Others have developed a fear of the water. A few are just not interested. If people can just go beyond these reasons and keep in mind that swimming can actually save lives, then more people might realize the importance of swimming to one’s self and to others.

There are swim schools like Zodiac Swim School that makes swimming more interesting. High quality and low-ratio swimming programs are offered at Zodiac Swim School that develop aquatic skills, self-confidence, and love for the water. The programs are for children and adults. This is why a lot of families are encouraged to learn together. There are programs that cater to all ages: from infants to toddlers to teenagers and up to adults. There are levels appropriate for age and skills.

Here are the programs available so you may assess which program fits you or your children:

Toddler Swimming Programs. These programs are designed for infants and toddlers with their caregivers that aim to provide an enjoyable introduction to an aquatic environment. The structure includes enthusiastic play and songs, as well as interactive circle time. Creative and stimulating pool equipment is used to develop skills like hand-eye coordination, roll-overs, breath control, and submersion. The caregivers are the primary facilitators while a swim school instructor leads the class towards individual development. A tadpole program is also available for those whose kids are ready to move on without the help of their caregivers.

Children’s Swimming Programs. The programs are created to provide swimmers with solid and manageable progression of skills from one level to higher ones. The levels are incorporated with tips for decision making skills. The programs aim to point children in the right direction for future skill development if they wish to become instructors and lifeguards as teenagers.

Adult swimming programs. It is never too late to learn how to swim. Zodiac Swim School offers programs for adults even for those who have zero experience in an aquatic environment. The basic program is designed to develop or increase a person’s comfort level. The programs progress as an individual is ready to move on to more advanced strokes and distances.

Swimming is a life long skill. Find the swimming program that best fits your current level, beginner through advanced, because it pays to be able to swim in all kinds of circumstances.

Choosing the Right Swim School for Your Kids

If your child is fond of the beach, swimming, or other water-related activities, sending him or her to swim school in the summer may be right up their alley. Swimming offers many benefits for children. Learning how to swim can give them a boost of confidence and self-esteem. It is a necessary life skill for them to learn early on. If you’re thinking about sending your kids to swim school, here are some things you should consider when choosing the right school:

What are your expectations?
Before choosing a swim school, ask yourself what you want your child to get out of the experience. Is it to learn basic swimming skills? To meet new people? Or just to have a fun summer experience? Talk to the administration and ask them about what the swim school’s focus is on. If your child is still learning the basics, it’s not appropriate to put him in a program with kids who already have advanced swimming skills. Choose a program that fits his skill level and make sure the instructors are informed about it in case he needs some one-on-one time.

What’s their track record?
Interview other parents who’ve sent their kids to that particular swim school and ask them about their experience with it. Were they happy with it? Would they send their child again? Make sure the trainers are experienced professionals.

What kind of training methods do they employ?
How are the instructors teaching the kids? Do your research on how many kids are in each class and how long each class lasts so you have an idea about the extent of your child’s training. What kind of methods do they use to teach less-experienced swimmers? How do they deal with emergency situations?

Remember, there’s no question too silly to ask. Air your concerns early and ask all the questions you need answered before enrolling your child.

Also, make sure to make reservations early -- at least 2 to 3 months in advanced. The closer it is to summer, the quicker swim school programs fill up, so don’t wait until the last minute to reserve a spot for your child.
